The knob in the arcature of the central portal, flanked by two columns, opens the drawbridge door, unmasking the keyhole and, simultaneously, the left openwork panel. Key with lantern in the form of an inverted truncated pyramid surmounted by a corbelled dome ending in a lantern and containing a sphere pierced with flamboyant motifs. The four sides of the lantern are pierced with a trellis and the initials J, P and Y, resting on a rose window flanked by two scallops in high relief. The rectangular boss is pierced with pearl motifs. Stem with double drilling. Bit in iron of axe with three closed holes, a bouterolle and a comb with eight teeth. Described as follows in the catalog of the Sotheby's sale in London on 21 Nov 1984.
The catalog of an auction by Sotheby's in London on 11.21.1984, described this as:A Rare French Iron Master Piece Lock and Key 18th Century, the lock centered by an arched doorway flanked by two columns and applied with scrollwork, centered by a small knob to release the arched door which hides the keyhole, at each side two small grills pierced with scrolls, on the reverse, the fixing of the barrel chiseled and turned, the lock plate turned at the end, the lantern key with pyramidal bow pierced with different motifs on each side, a P a J a Y and trelliswork, surmounted by a shaped dome, surmounted by bell shaped finial, the interior of the bow with a pierced sphere decorated with flamboyant motifs, the cylindrical ferrule with rosace flanked by two shells of St James resting on a pedestal with pearl decoration, fine toothed bit, lock 4 7/8 in. x 3 1/8 in. (12,5 cm x 8 cm) the key 3 ¾ in.(9,5 cm).
