Cenotaph veil, Turkey, 19th century, silk lampas, green background, decorated with inscriptions in chevrons. The Qur'anic verses in the narrow zigzag bands refer to the Qibla direction towards which Muslims turn in prayer, and to which the heads of the deceased are directed at their funerals. This is the first part of verse 144 of Sura 2. A similar example at the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire in Brussels, donated by Errera.
