Hermaphroditic amulet, known as a "devil hunter" for couple protection. Cut, carved and polished wrought iron. Under a belt loop, a Gothic arcature highlighted with gold dots supports three pendants, two of which are "mano fica", flanking the third, uniting the male and female sexes. France or Italy, 15th/16th century 8, 87 cm NB: The mano-fica (fig hand) is a gesture made with the left hand to ward off the evil eye. The thumb protrudes between the index and middle fingers, as illustrated by Albrecht Dürer in his hand studies in 1495. Part of the "Cathedral times" chapter
