Early 18th-century English key from the collection of Renato Maggioni. English keys were made of hardened steel and required precision and mastery on the part of the artist. Designed for expensive furniture, light yet strong, they were highly sought-after for their grace and beauty. The ring was elaborately carved with initials, animals, foliage, coats of arms and often noble crowns. The shank was chased and artistically worked, and the bit well defined.
